What Makes a Marine Grade Switch?

What Makes a Switch “Marine Grade”?

A marine grade switch is built to survive conditions that would quickly destroy a standard automotive or household switch. On a boat, switches are exposed to moisture, spray, UV light, vibration, and temperature swings — often all at once. True marine-grade construction addresses all of it.

Sealing & Waterproof Protection (IP Ratings)

One of the biggest differences is sealing.

Marine switches are designed to prevent water intrusion from the front — especially when mounted on a dash that gets sprayed down or exposed to rain. This protection is measured using IP (Ingress Protection) ratings.

Many of our marine rocker switches and push button switches are rated IP68 front of panel (like our rocker switches) or IP69K, meaning they are resistant to dust and capable of withstanding water submersion or high-pressure spray.

Some models — like our Bluewater push button switches — go even further, with sealed connectors on the back. That means the switch is protected from both the front and rear, eliminating common ingress points and creating a fully waterproof system when paired with sealed wiring.

Corrosion-Resistant Terminals

Marine environments are harsh on metal. Salt air and humidity accelerate corrosion.

That’s why marine-grade switches typically use tin-plated copper terminals. Copper provides excellent electrical conductivity (low resistance), while tin plating adds a protective layer that dramatically improves corrosion resistance.

You get the performance of copper — without the rapid oxidation.

UV Resistance & Exterior Durability

Unlike indoor switches, marine switches live in direct sunlight.

A true marine-grade switch uses UV-stable materials so the actuator doesn’t fade, crack, or become brittle over time. All of our switches are built for exterior marine use and designed to withstand years of sun exposure.  Our printed rocker covers last years longer than cheap competitors, and our laser etched rocker covers literally have no paint to wear off, you’d have to rub through the plastic to remove.

Built for Real Marine Use

Beyond sealing and materials, marine switches must handle:

  • Constant vibration
  • Temperature swings
  • Repeated washdowns
  • Long-term exposure to moisture

That’s the difference between a cheap import switch and one designed specifically for boats.

Choosing the Right Type of Marine Switch for your Application

Marine-grade switches all serve the same core purpose — reliable control of electrical systems — but the style, installation method, and long-term flexibility vary by type. Below is a practical comparison to help you choose the right switch for your boat and dash layout.

Marine Rocker Switches

Marine rocker switches have been the go-to switch style on boats for over 20 years — and for good reason. They’re reliable, durable, economical, and designed to fit the rectangular cutouts already found in most factory dash panels.

  • Industry-standard rectangular size (direct replacement for existing panels)
  • Common Carling-style Contura II, V, and XIV formats
  • Highly reliable mechanical design used for decades
  • Wide range of illuminated and non-illuminated options

If your panel already has rectangular rocker cutouts, replacing them with the same style is usually the simplest solution — unless you’re rebuilding the entire panel. That’s one reason rocker switches remain one of our top-selling marine switch categories.

While rocker switches have been around for decades, they’ve evolved. Modern versions include built-in LED illumination and laser-etched switch covers that allow labels to glow cleanly at night — similar to the backlit controls in your vehicle. In many cases, if the switch body still functions properly, you can simply replace the rocker cover for a fast, economical refresh.

Marine Push Button Switches

Marine push button switches are popular on newer boats because of their sleek, modern appearance. They provide a clean dash aesthetic and are available in both mechanical and solid-state designs.

  • Modern, high-end appearance
  • Available in momentary and latching versions
  • Solid-state programmable options available
  • Two-in-one and multi-function configurations available

Some of our push button switches can come programmed to boat specific load needs — such as combining navigation and anchor lighting into one switch — or offer 2N1 pushbutton functionality in a single housing. This flexibility makes them popular for advanced dash layouts.

Push buttons are also easier to install in many cases. Most require only a simple round hole drilled with a standard bit, rather than the precise rectangular cutout needed for rocker switches. Some models include integrated laser-etched labeling, allowing installation directly into fiberglass or panels without separate labeling components.

While solid-state push buttons are often the most premium-priced option, we also carry more economical toggle versions with lower current ratings for appropriate applications.

Marine Toggle Switches

Marine toggle switches offer a classic, tactile feel that many boat owners still prefer. The physical lever makes it visually obvious whether the switch is on or off, and the mechanical click provides reassuring feedback.

  • Classic, old-school marine appearance
  • Strong mechanical “click” feel
  • Simple, durable design
  • Easy installation with a single round drill hole

Toggle switches are very easy to install — typically requiring only a 1/2″ drill hole — and they remain extremely reliable over long service life. For added protection, waterproof boots can be installed to seal the panel opening.

To modernize the look of this classic style, we’ve designed stainless steel toggle mounting nuts that elevate the appearance while maintaining the timeless functionality many boaters appreciate.

Marine Grade Ignition Switches

We also carry a small selection of marine key switches.  These are commonly used as ignition switches, or can also be used as a lockout for things like an overboard discharge to comply with USCG regulations

Why Buy Marine Switches from New Wire Marine?

We don’t just sell marine switches — we use them every day.

At New Wire Marine, we design and build thousands of custom boat dash panels each year. That means we work hands-on with marine rocker switches, push button switches, and toggle switches in real-world marine environments — not just in a catalog.

We understand what works, what fails, and what holds up over time.
