Two Part Marine Rocker Switches
How to Change A Rocker Switch Cover
Our genuine Carling Contura marine rocker switches are built as a two-part system:
- A switch body (base) – the electrical component that handles the current
- A switch cover (actuator) – the visible part you press, often labeled
This modular design is one of the biggest advantages of our marine rocker switches. It allows you to replace or customize the appearance and labels of your switch (the cover), without replacing the actual electromechanical part (the body) or any of the wiring in many cases.
The covers are interchangeable on any switch body for different aesthetic styling. For a complete switch replacement you obviously need both.
Switch Bodies vs. Covers – What’s the Difference?
The switch body contains:
- The internal contacts and terminals
- The current rating, 20A & 12V / 24V voltage ratings
- The illumination circuitry, including type and color
- The electrical function (ON/OFF, ON/OFF/ON, momentary, etc.)
The actuator (cover) determines:
- The label (BILGE, ACC, HORN, etc.)
- Whether it’s printed or laser etched, which impacts night readability and color choices
- The illumination window design
- The styling (Contura II, V, XIV) and overall appearance
If your rocker switch is no longer functioning electrically, you’ll need both the body and the cover, and we’ve conveniently paired them together in each actuator style, which we call “combos”.

Which Marine Rocker Switch Style is Right for me?
Contura II Rocker Switches (Printed)
Contura II is the classic “traditional” marine rocker switch found on boats for decades. If you’re replacing older switches, there’s a good chance your dash already has contura II’s — making it the simplest drop-in replacement rocker switch cover.
These are our most economical rocker switches and use durable, UV-resistant pad-printed labels. They feature small tactile bumps on the actuator, making them easy to identify by feel.
Red & Blue Lens Options
Contura II covers use a colored lens (red or blue) that tints the light from the switch body. Most configurations use an indicator-style light that turns on when the switch is ON, rather than night-time backlighting.
Built for Marine Use — No “Soft Touch” Coating
We only use hard, UV-stable plastic actuators. Unlike soft rubberized covers that can melt or turn sticky in the sun, these are designed for long-term marine exposure.
Choose covers only if your switch still works, or select a complete combo if you need both the body and actuator.
White Contura II Switch Covers
Contura II is currently the only rocker switch cover style that’s also available in white. This is a very clean look when paired with a white panel, and perhaps surprisingly can also look really good on black.
Contura V Rocker Switches (Laser Etched / Backlit)
Contura V rocker switches are our most popular etched marine rocker style. They maintain the familiar rectangular Carling footprint while adding modern laser-etched illumination for improved nighttime visibility.
Instead of using a colored lens like Contura II, these covers are laser etched. The laser removes the top coating so light shines directly through the etched areas – creating a clean, automotive-style glow that’s easy to read in low light.
Independent & Dependent Illumination
When paired with the correct dual-light switch body, Contura V combos can provide both an independent backlight (on with your dash/nav lights) and a dependent indicator light (on when the switch is activated). This makes them ideal for boats that operate frequently at night.
Customizable & Versatile
Contura V covers are fully customizable. You can choose from our stocked labels or create your own text using our online custom tool. They’re available in multiple illumination colors and are still compatible with standard Contura switch bodies.
Contura XIV Rocker Switches (Modern Laser Etched)
Contura XIV rocker switches offer the same laser-etched illumination technology as Contura V, but with a more modern, refined appearance. We laser etch these in-house, allowing for stocked labels as well as fully customizable designs.
Dimensionally, Contura XIV covers are slightly narrower than Contura V. This makes them a great solution for panels where switch cutouts are spaced closely together and wider actuators may interfere with each other.
Modern Illumination Design
Instead of using a separate oval lens window, Contura XIV designs integrate the symbol itself as the illumination lens. The text can softly backlight at night,
while the symbol illuminates when the switch is activated — creating a clean, contemporary look.
Customizable & Available in Multiple Colors
Contura XIV switches are available as covers only or complete combos, with multiple LED color options. They’re ideal for newer boats or anyone looking for
a distinctive, updated dash style.

There’s no guesswork — you see exactly what your switch will look like before you order.

Built for Real Marine Use
We don’t sell unverified imports or generic knockoffs. The rocker switches we offer are selected for proper marine-grade materials, reliable internal components, and long-term durability in harsh environments.
Because we install these switches into panels ourselves, we know what holds up — and what doesn’t.
