This sealed relay is perfect for the stormy seas your boat may sail. This is used when the component that a switch is connected to has a higher current load than the switch itself.
This is a NO relay – Rated at 80A. This waterproof relay has a 12V coil and contacts, which means it’s meant to be switched by 12V switch, and will switch a 12V (nominal) line.
The NO (Normally Open) circuit is always off (an open circuit is off), unless a +12V is applied to the coil (86 terminal). Applying the 12V coil will, in turn, power the relay. Remember, this is used when you have a switch that is not rated for the current load of the device. For example, let’s say you’re using a 20A rocker switch, but want to turn on a 70A windlass. This relay would act as the “middle man” between the rocker switch and the windlass, with the switch powering the relay, and the relay powering the component.
This relay is nice to use on the water, because the case is sealed with potting compound where it connects with the base.
There is also a tab to allow for easy mounting. This relay can be mounted within the panel, attached to the harnessed leads, or outside of the panel, attached to a rigging board.
