All about
Battery Management
Battery Management on a boat encompasses everything from connecting and disconnecting your batteries to charging them and ensuring they are ready for emergency use.
Most boats larger than a jon boat typically have at least two batteries: a start battery and a house battery. The start battery is dedicated to cranking your engine, while the house battery powers all the other electrical loads on your boat.
For multi-engine boats, you’ll generally have one start battery per engine and a separate house battery. It’s important to note that multiple house batteries may be wired in parallel as a bank to increase capacity and extend run time for your devices. These batteries should be treated as a single unit for charging and discharging purposes.
Trolling motors often have their own dedicated battery systems, sometimes operating on a different voltage—like two 12V batteries wired in series to create 24V—separate from your boat’s main system. These batteries typically aren’t charged while underway but rather through shore power.
At New Wire Marine, we provide all the essential components to make your boat’s battery system operate flawlessly. From boat battery switches and automatic charging relays to custom-designed panels, RigPro units, rigging boards, and Master Distribution Boxes, we’ve got everything you need to optimize your boat’s electrical system. Trust us to help you make your boat the best it can be.
